General ################################################################################ ================================================================================ A. Impact Damage Gauge ================================================================================ One of the most obvious changes to the system is the "Impact Damage Gauge." At the start of the game, both characters start with green life meters and two bat icons underneath. When the life bar goes to zero, you lose a bat icon and there's a momentary break in play. The other character keeps what remaining life he has, so you effectively have one round, with a very long lifebar. (Just for convenience, I'll refer to losing a bat icon as "losing a round.") When you receive damage, the amount of green you lose from your life meter is replaced by red and white. Red is permanent damage. White is temporary damage that refills when you aren't being attacked--you won't regain life if you are blocking, or being hit or thrown. Keep in mind that white damage is real damage. You can be KOed on white damage alone. Note that pounces and block damage will only inflict white damage. (This is true of ES pounces as well. The only exceptions are Bishamon's Togakubi Sarashi and Felicia's Toy Touch.) Bigger chain combos seem to have a bigger percentage of white damage. Also, when one of the characters has lost a round, his opponent will regain white damage during the break. The winning character can move before his opponent as well. I'm not sure why, but the life meter drains from the inside out, not from the outside in, like in other fighting games. It isn't confusing though, like I'd thought it be. A nice little graphical touch is that the flame in the middle of the screen flickers towards the life meter of the character receiving damage. ================================================================================ B. Chain Combos ================================================================================ Chain combos follow the "Hunter Chain" sequence. i.e. jab, short, strong, forward, fierce, roundhouse. You can skip any button you want and you can switch to standing or crouching between each attack. They're not all guaranteed to hit, however--you need to take into account the range and speed of the attacks. Most characters can air chain (though they won't necessarily combo), and some also have link combos. Most characters can do the Hunter Chain in the air, though getting multiple hits is more difficult than when you're on the ground, obviously. Bulleta supposedly can do 4 hits against Anakaris. (I've only been able to do 3.) You cannot cancel a move if you have chained into it. The only exception is cancelling with button-tap EX moves. The most common way of doing this is to use part of the command as the chain combo. For instance, Lei-Lei's Tenraiha EX is: o short, RH, strong, strong | You can do a short, RH chain combo, then press strong, strong, up, to interrupt the RH with a Tenraiha. While this is the easiest way to use these types of EXes, I think it's possible to cancel any normal move with a button-tap EX. ================================================================================ C. Multiple Air Attacks ================================================================================ A subtle change to the system is the way multiple air attacks work. In VH, depending on the character, you could perform air chains or non-chained air attacks. There are many examples of the former--Morrigan's jab, fierce, Demitri's short, fierce, and Sasquatch's jab, fierce are some of the more famous ones. Bishamon probably makes the most use of the non-chained air attacks--roundhouse on the way up, and forward on the way down. (Note that the first attack can't hit if you want the second attack to come out.) In VS, everyone can air chain, and it's possible to combine chains and non-chains. Using the Bishamon example again, he can do a forward, fierce chain on the way up, and roundhouse on the way down. Because the fierce whiffs, you can perform another attack. The rule for non-chained air attacks is that you cannot use the same move twice in one jump. If you've done an air chain, however, only the first hit counts toward this rule. It's possible to do forward, chain into fierce, then fierce, but not forward, chain into fierce, then forward. Hope this makes sense. @_@ ================================================================================ D. Air Blocking ================================================================================ Air blocking has also been changed. In Vampire Hunter, it was possible to air block moves only if the attacker's feet were not on the ground. For instance, you could airblock DP-type moves only if the attacker's feet had left the ground. (The ES version was never air blockable, however.) In VS, you can airblock DP-type moves at any point. Even ES DP moves are air-blockable. ================================================================================ E. Codes ================================================================================ Argh! Codes in a Darkstalkers game! Hopefully, there are no secret characters. ^_^ Soul Keeper mode: on the character select screen, highlight random character select and press start 5 times. Move to the character you want to start with and select him / her normally. When you beat a CPU character, you will continue the game as the character you have just defeated. Mid-boss: to fight your mid-boss, get 3 EX finishes without losing any rounds. Oboro Bishamon: to fight Oboro Bishamon, get to the last CPU character with all EX finishes, and without losing any rounds. Alternate Gallon: hold down start and press all three punches to select a glowing Gallon with alternate animations. Extra Colors: press either 2 punches or 2 kicks when selecting your character. The 2 kick colors are similar to the jab + forward Dark Colors in VH. ################################################################################ II. Common Moves ################################################################################ ================================================================================ A. Basics ================================================================================ Dash forward: -o -o Dash backward: o- o- Throw: o- or -o + strong / fierce or forward / RH (when close to opponent) Throw ranges are EXTREMELY short in VS Forward slide / roll (when getting up): -o + P or K Backward slide / roll (when getting up): o- + P or K It seems like you're more vulnerable when you roll now. Pounce (after knocking down opponent): o | + P or K (PP or KK for ES) Taunt: press start ================================================================================ B. Defense ================================================================================ Advancing Guard: Tap P or K while blocking an attack. You have to register 4 button presses while the block star is visible. The button used determines how far the opponent is pushed back. If you use multiple buttons, the last button you press determines how far you push your opponent back. Anakaris has no Advancing Guard. Guard Cancel: -o | \ + P or K o o Guard Cancels are used to interrupt your block stun with a counterattack. They have, apparently, much less priority than in Vampire Hunter. The easiest moves to Guard Cancel are multi-hitting moves that hit high. They are also good against chains that hit high--it's very important that you know which of your moves and which of your opponent's moves must be blocked low. Low attacks are hard to GC. ================================================================================ C. Dark Force ================================================================================ Press the same strength P + K to activate Dark Force. This takes one level of Special. Your character is temporarily given special powers. All the Dark Forces last for about the same amount of time except for the "illusion" types--Lilith's, Morrigan's, and Gallon's. At the end of the Dark Force, there's a recovery period during which your character can't do anything. This is true even if the Dark Force runs out in the middle of a move. As soon as you are done performing the move (or recovering from a hit), your character will go into the "Dark Force ending" animation. It's possible to avoid this by "deactivating" your Dark Force before the timer runs out. Just press the same strength P + K. You will almost always want to cancel your Dark Force just before it runs out, so that you can avoid the recovery time. Dark Forces fall into 6 basic categories: flight, super armor, hyper armor, powerup, option, and illusion. Flight: Pretty self-explanatory. All your moves are available during flight. Your character will land if you get hit or if you push down when you're close to the ground. Jedah and Q-Bee have flight. Super Armor: Your character will not go into hit stun if he is hit by a single attack. A combo will stop him, however. Bishamon and Sasquatch have super armor. (Sasquatch has a second DF, an option type, which you can activate by pressing fierce + RH.) Hyper Armor: Kind of like super armor, only more so. ^_^ You cannot use special moves, use any throws, or even block when you have hyper armor activated. You can't be thrown either, and you will not go into hit stun. No matter what. Never ever ever. You cannot be knocked down, and even "grab and hit" moves like the Darkness Illusion and Midnight Pleasure will not take. Lei-Lei, Aulbath, and Anakaris have hyper armor. Power Up: Your character gets the ability to do a single powerful move repeatedly. Bulleta loses her regular throw, Victor loses his standing punches and regular punch throws, and Zabel loses all his throws. These three characters have power up. Option: Your character gains an option (like in a shooter), that follows up his attacks. Besides adding hits to your combos, the option results in trades where normally, the opponent's move would have hit you clean. (The option will follow through with its attack while you're getting hit.) Demitri and Felicia have option DFs. Sasquatch's fierce + RH is also an option DF. Illusion: A multiple(s) of your character appears and mirrors (or follows) your attacks. The timer on these DFs is shorter than other DFs, presumably because of the insane combo potential. Lilith, Morrigan, and Gallon have illusion. ################################################################################ III. Character Specific Moves ################################################################################ Special moves are like special moves in all other Capcom games. You can do as many as you like, and they build Special meter when you perform them. Most special throws and almost all special moves have an ES version. Press two or more punches or kicks (whichever is appropriate) when executing the command. You need one level of Special to perform ES. Some ES moves are slightly more powerful versions of the special moves. Others are fairly different from the original move. EX moves can only be performed when you have Special meter stored. There are a few EXes that take more than 1 level of Special. BTW, I've never seen an explanation of what ES and EX stand for. They may be among those acronyms that don't stand for anything. Like HAL. ^_^ Notes: [air] move can be performed in the air [air only] move can only be performed in the air [GC] Guard Cancel [GC only] move can only be performed as a Guard Cancel The description of Dark Forces begins with the type of DF in brackets. Jedah, the Black Messiah ================================================================================ Jedah has a hopping dash, like Morrigan's, which takes him into the air. The distance is controllable. He also has a forward-only aerial dash which he can perform during from his regular forward or back dash. The aerial dash is angled down. The aerial dash itself has hit regions (no need to stick out an attack) and will knock the opponent down if it hits. Trivia: Jedah is the lord of the House Doma, which means Ozom (the demon who gives Zabel his power) is one of his servants. Jedah was supposed to have died before DS. Lilith, the Lost Child of Desire ================================================================================ Lilith's dash, unlike Morrigan's, is ground based. She can only perform standing attacks during her dash. The distance is also uncontrollable. It's possible to link attacks from a dash (e.g. dash short, crouch forward) but I don't think you can chain. Trivia: Lilith is the first wife of Adam, made from the same material he was made of, and his equal. She left Eden after getting into a fight with Adam about who would be on top during sex. She wanders throughout the world, seducing men and taking their seed (without actually having sex with them). I don't know if Capcom knows this, but it seemed vaguely relevant. ^_^ Lilith (the VS character) is a part of Morrigan's soul that was imprisoned 300 years ago by Belial, her master, the former lord of House Aensland. .----------------------------------------------------------------- Special Moves | Soul Flash | | | \ -o + punch [air] | o o | | Lilith throws a bat surrounded by hearts. Um, yeah. Zabel has an air dash. Trivia: Zabel gets his power from Ozom, a demon of the House Doma. The little cyclops cushion thing is La Malta, a little servant demon sent to (unbeknownst to Zabel), watch what Zabel does and report back to Ozom. Zabel has a crush on Lei-Lei and Le Malta, apparently, has a crush on Bulleta. Lilith: A sleepy-eyed Lilith in pajamas, holding a pillow. Bulleta: A waitress in a minidress. (Bulleta's the only one who actually gets older.) Demitri: Innocent looking blonde girl in a dress. Morrigan: A giant, big-eyed little girl. (She's a little girl, but she's BIG. Turns into a dog (?) when Demitri squeezes the blood out of her. Victor: A giant Frankenstein woman. Scary. Bishamon: A long haired girl in a very short kimono. Hot. ^_^ Felicia: A tall, full figured woman with cat ears and a long white dress. Sasquatch: A girl with pigtails in a Sasquatch suit. Her head sticks out of Sasquatch's mouth. She also holds a banana shaped pillow. Incredibly cute. When Demitri squeezes the blood out of her, you can see she has the same face that Sasquatch has. Aulbath: A mermaid. Lei-Lei: A younger Lei-Lei in pajamas, hugging a younger Lin-Lin in pajamas. Even cuter than Sasquatch. Anakaris: ?? I'm not sure how to describe this. Long limbed Egyptian woman. Gallon: A long haired girl in Chinese clothes. Wolf's ears and tail. Zabel: Short haired heavy metal chick. These are the same graphics used for Anakaris's Pharaoh Decoration EX. B. Bishamon's Togakubi Sarashi Most of the characters' torsos turn into something after they're cut in half by Bishamon's Togakubi Sarahi ES. Jedah: His wing. Q-Bee: A pot of honey (Pooh's, I think), with a little Q-Bee inside. Lilith: None. (She hangs over the edge of the table.) Bulleta: Picnic basket with Bulleta's torso inside. Demitri: None. (He crosses his arms.) Morrigan: None. (Just her head.) Victor: None. (He holds his own intestines.) Bishamon: Giant ogre head. Felicia: Stray cat in a cardboard box. Sasquatch: Sasquatch-shaped ice shaving machine. Aulbath: A fish. Lei-Lei: Mini Lei-Lei and Lin-Lin. Anakaris: None. (He sticks his arms out, classic mummy style.) Gallon: None.
